Fundraising gig in aid of Pahar Trust Nepal

The Head Of Steam Limited - who own The Cluny - are aiming to fully fund the building of a school in Nepal. The school will cost £15,000, and will replace a falling-down shack currently used.
It is to be ‘Shree Bhakta Primary School' and is in the village of Mayum, near Lingkhim, in the Taplejung region of mountainous east Nepal. It will be a 4-room, single storey building with running water, toilets and electricity.

Much of the manual work (breaking stones and carrying to site) will be done by the villagers themselves under the project control of ex-Gurkha soldiers.

Discussions are taking place to twin the school with a school in Gateshead.

Pahar Trust Nepal have built over 40 schoolds to date, and are based in The Isle of Man.

Shields
In a town where music heritage is long and illustrious stretching back over several decades, Luke Elgie, Rich Sutton & Tom Larthe met amongst the chosen few who gathered to study ‘Popular & Contemporary Music’ and hone their understanding of their chosen instruments at Newcastle College.

Their immediate conversations discussing shared musical luminaries, made them aware of their clear desire to be in a band and to create innovative beat-driven pop music, that is both interesting and influential, as far removed from the soulless and generic music that the world finds itself incessantly subjected to today.

The band recruited the percussive and tech skills of John Martindale and the deft touch of David Williams as a 3rd guitarist and pianist, and they had completed a live sound that is far greater than the sum of all its parts, with songs that defy the listener to try and walk away without a chorus replaying, on repeat, in their mind.

Once the band recorded their first demos in the spring of 2011, they serendipitously fell into the white hot palms of a man who needs no introduction to those in music, Adrian Bushby (Foo Fighters/ MUSE/ U2/ Two Door Cinema Club), in one way or another we all own something that Adrian Bushby has applied his logic to.

Adrian’s mixes revealed what he proclaimed to see in the demos, that being the rich, intricate melodies and harmony that SHIELDS create in their music.

The Union Choir
Hailing mainly from the seaside town of South Shields and surrounding areas, The Union Choir was conceived when songwriter Jon Melvin had the idea of setting up a loose collective featuring like-minded musicians. People dropped in and people dropped out but eventually the ensemble evolved into a nine piece in early 2010.

The band gained a large and loyal following with a series of DIY gigs around the region, even hosting their own show in a local cinema. Early demos created a buzz amongst Music Blogs, and stylistic comparisons were drawn with the National, Elbow and Arcade Fire. Sonic Reverie tipped the band to be huge, going on to write, “with equal measures of majesty and desolation The Union Choir sculpt something a bit special”

Their first official single, Eleanor, was released on Cottage Industries in August 2011, and quickly sold out. They released their second single, the double A-side Your Melodica/Lavender on 28th January 2012. It sold out on the night of release.

Tomahawks For Targets
Tomahawks for Targets are a band from the north-east of England. They currently make music using voices, guitars, drums and keyboards. Any change in this will be self-evident. There are four human components in Tomahawks for Targets. Indeed, if one wished to be trite, one could pronounce the band ‘Tomahawks four Targets’, but time is short and such paronomasia is best left to the experts.
75% of Tomahawks for Targets proudly sport full British driving licences. The remainder knows his place.

Ghosts Of Old Berlin
Born of the frozen north, this is Ghosts of Old Berlin. Creating music that is at once immediate, but also dark, evocative and sometimes soothing, this absorbing four-piece is refining its self-attributed 'doom pop' sound.

Ghosts… distribute their music under a Creative Commons licence, so that content can be shared and remixed non-commercially. All of Ghosts… current output can be either downloaded or streamed from www.ghostsofoldberlin.bandcamp.com.
