TOY (Heavenly Records)
Brought back by Cosmos to Newcastle and the Cluny after a 2013 of them never really being away, Toy have been busy cementing their status as standard bearers of modern psychedelia with new LP Join The Dots, their second in as many years. Marrying sophisticated chord progressions with a cornucopia of effects, enigmatic lyricism and driving Motorik rhythms, Toy’s songwriting is very much a communal effort. Live, the band admit to enjoying playing late at night to people in altered states, and in turn the tracks are frequently altered: instrumental sections in particular are structured freely, enabling the band to exploit the bleed and feedback of each venue to produce endless variations of their songs.
THE PROPER ORNAMENTS
A 5-piece formed around the nucleus of James Hoare (moonlighting from Veronica Falls) and Argentinian Max Clapps, and their mutual love of the Velvet Underground, Love, the Left Banke and the Beach Boys.
